The Arms Race was the building of weapons between the Soviet Union and United States. It mainly consisted of building nuclear weapons, basically to "out do" one another. The codename for the creation of the world's first nuclear bomb was the Manhattan Project. The two cities the United States bombed in Japan were Nagaski and Hiroshima. The first group to start testing nuclear bombs was the Soviet Union and on August 29th, 1943. The goal of the two countries was to create a weapon no other country could match, but it turned into a competition between the Soviets and Americans to see who could "one-up" one another. In 1952, the United States developed the H-bomb also known as the Hydrogen Bomb. The difference between the atomic bomb and the hydrogen bomb is that the atomic bomb is a fission reaction bomb, while the hydrogen bomb is a fusion reaction bomb which is way more unstable than a fission reaction bomb. The ICMB missile was used as nuclear transportation and was first successfully used by the Soviet Union in 1957. The SM-65 was the first ICMB created by the United States. The LGM minuteman missile is a nuclear land-based ICMB missile which is a guided, silo launched, land based attacking missile. The United States has approximately 500 nuclear bombs today, while Russia has approximately 856 nuclear bombs today.
